چکیده

Achalasia is a disorder characterized by aperistalsis of the esophageal body and impaired relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter. Dysphagia and regurgitation of undigested, retained food or accumulated saliva are common presenting symptoms. Recurrent aspiration pneumonia may also occur particularly in older patients [1]. Patients with achalasia are clearly at a high risk for aspiration during general anesthesia. The rapidsequence induction technique with endotracheal intubation and cricoid pressure is, therefore, indicated [2]. This is a report of two patients with achalasia who underwent esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) during general anesthesia which was induced using the rapid-sequence induction technique. The cases illustrate the limitations of the airway protection that this technique offers such high risk patients.

Sudden Tracheal Collapse during EGD and Subsequent Anesthetic Management with Dexmedetomidine-Ketamine in a Patient with Achalasia and Tracheomalacia

We present a patient who experienced airway obstruction during an elective esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) under anesthesia secondary to previously undiagnosed tracheomalacia. Physiology of airway obstruction with forced breathing maneuvers is discussed along with the potential advantages of dexmedetomidine-ketamine sedation for management of patients with achalasia undergoing outpatient endos...

Safe Use of Flammable Endotracheal Tubes During Anesthesia for Laryngeal Laser Surgery-Report of 1024 Cases and a Brief Literature Review

Introduction: One of the major concerns in laryngeal laser surgery is the risk of airway fire. The introduction ofwrapped tubes and metal tubes has reduced the fire hazards. However, these tubes are expensive and do not provide convenient access to the surgical field. There are few laboratory studies addressing the resistance of polyvinylchloride tubes against ignition in the given circum...
